Thursday nights Seminar presentation - March 13, 2008
starting at 8pm in Corkers Lounge

The Thursday night presentation this year will be given by Michael Hall. Mike is an accomplished Art Professor, Decoy and Folk Art author and pioneer decoy collector. He has most recently been appointed to the position of Adjunct Curator of Folk Art for the Columbus Museum of Art.

The presentation will tie into an exhibit that will be on display at the museum titled "Seeing and Believing"

Seeing and Believing:
Waterfowl Decoys and Modern Art

For over a hundred years, hunters have debated the question of what is that lures wild birds to the carved “imposters” they set out in the marshes and bays along the migratory wildfowl paths traversing the North American continent. Some contend that wild birds only “decoy” to carved and painted images rendered in a highly detailed and naturalistic style that might be described as “realism.” Others argue that a bird will “decoy” to any form that simply replicates the essentials of form, pattern and color that characterize a given species of bird. This camp is inclined to an art style evincing a certain “abstraction.”

In short, what it is that hunters believe that birds “see” (view) and what hunters think birds “believe“ (perceive) has significantly influenced the form of the wildfowl decoy. Thus, carved decoys exhibit a wide range of stylistic characteristics – characteristics that sign the experience, beliefs and perceptions of hunters, carvers and collectors as much (or more) than they do those of the birds being hunted.

The lecture “Seeing and Believing” (which will be presented to the Ohio Decoy Collectors Association this March) will focus on the matter of style in the art of the wildfowl decoy. The lecture will address the ways in which issues of seeing and believing have conditioned the form of collectible decoys and the ways in which those same issues have shaped various forms of modern art. The lecture is intended to broaden collector appreciation for decoys as folk art and to honor the aesthetic interpretation of decoys first articulated by the pioneer decoy enthusiast Adele Earnest in her 1965 book, The Art of the Decoy.
