Fish decoys are fishing lures, usually without hooks, that are designed to be jigged through a hole in the ice to lure fish within range of a spear.

  1. Levels of Comeption: Open and Youth

  1. All fish decoys must be made of wood.  No castings, kits, or machine duplicated carvings in whole or part will be allowed.  Fins must be made of wood, metal or leather.  Line-ties, eyes, barbels, and ballast may be made of any material.
  2. All fish decoys must have been made after the last ODCCA Show.
  3. Fish Decoys will be judged in the water and must respond favorable to the jig stick.  This generally means the decoy, whenfichy placed in the water and jigged will sink and move forward in a circular pattern.
  4. Fish decoys must be of sturdy construction and have durable paint or finish.  Those that split, check, lose paint or show other faults in construction during or after judging will be disqualified.
  5. Maximum size for all fish decoys is 24-inches.  Line-ties are required.  If multiple line ties are used, carver must mark the one the judges should utilize.
  6. There will be no penalty for the misplacement of pectoral or pelvic fins.
  7. All visible marks that would identify the carver must be covered with masking tape.  For record keeping purposes, masking tape will be placed on all decoys.
  8. There will be three fish decoy categories, each with three classes as follows:
    1. Category A -Working Fish Decoys - Only the basic mouth shape, single gill coverings, and delineations for the beginning of the tail fin may be carved or burned into the decoy.  No texturing allowed, and no painted scales.  Judging criteria: swimming, ability -60%; likeness to species - 30%; craftsmanship - 10%.
    2. Category B - Decorative Fish Decoys-  Maximum details allowed.  Judging criteria: swimming ability - 40%; likeness to species - 50%; craftsmanship - 10%.
      1. Categories A and B will have the following classes:
        1. Warm-water Game Fish:  All Bass, Pike, Musky, Walleye, Sunfish(bluegill, crappie etc.), and Yellow Perch.
        2. Cold-water Game Fish:  Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat, Golden, Lake and Brook trout, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden, Salmon and Grayling.
        3. Additional Fish:  All Catfish, Sturgeon, Suckers, Minnows, Gar, Shad, Cisco, and Whitefish.
    3. Category C- Folk-Art Fish Decoys - Judging criteria:  swimming ability - 60%; desigh - 30%; craftsmansip - 10%.
      1. Category C will have the following Classes:
        1. Fish - Must be generic (not like any real fish) in both form and paint.
        2. Two Color Fish & Critters. (Eye colors do not count).
        3. Critters - May be generic or life like in form and/or paint.
  9. The Show Chairman will reclassify any entry that is considered to be entered in the wrong category or class.
  10. Only one decoy per participent may be entered per class.
  11. Participents agree to the bound and abide by these official rules and by the decisions of the ODCCA whose decision shall be final relating to in all matters relating to the contest. Decision of the contst chairmen and judge(s) as to all contest matters are final and nonappealable. Entry fee refounds will not be given to disqualified decoys.
