Robert Capriola has been carving and collecting decoys since 1974 and his art blends the best of age-old traditions and modern construction techniques with a biologist’s
knowledge of the birds.  His interest in waterfowl and hunting began during fall trips to the Remington Gun Club on Stratford Island Connecticut where he observed hunters heading in from the marsh in boats and camouflage.  Robert made his first decoys for hunting the Potomac River bottomlands, and began to explore the rich history and traditions of hunting and decoys he found on Maryland's Eastern Shore.  Several best-in-show awards and his willingness to teach others has led to many invitations to judge decoy contests, including opportunities to judge at the Ward Foundation World's Carving Competition.

In this year’s seminar, Robert will cover such topics as organizing your workbench for painting, philosophies around decoy design and paint, and using materials creatively (both wood and paint).  Mr. Capriola will also cover painting methods such as sealing, organizing the bird, blending, impasto, combing, dry-brushing, creating contour, and layering effects.  This will be a hands on seminar, and participants are asked to wear clothes/aprons that can be permanently stained as they will be painting with oils.

The cost of this year’s seminar will be $40 and participants will be asked to provide their own supplies (a list of supplies will be emailed to participants after they register).  The seminar will take place on Friday, March 16th from  1-5pm in the audio/visual room on the 3rd floor of the Holiday Inn.

Space will be limited, so please reserve your place by contacting Jason Kuhnle at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
