Fish Decoy, Poolside Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Flat Art, Exhibition Hall Saturday 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wildfowlers & Shooting Stool Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Poolside General Contest Rules: The following rules apply to all contests unless otherwise stated. 1. All entries must remain on display until 3 p.m. Sunday. 2. All entries must have never been entered in any ODCCA competition. 3. No previous purchase award winners from any contest will be permitted. 4. All entries must be made of wood, cork or stretched canvas. 5. Levels of Competition: Open: Anyone who has won a Best of Show in Intermediate or Amateur in that ODCCA contest. “Open” may also refer to carvers of all levels. Typically, these divisions have no Novice or Intermediate levels and are not subject to advancement rules. Intermediate: Anyone who has won a Best of Show in that ODCCA Contest in the Novice Division. After winning Intermediate you must enter the Open. Novice: Typically beginning carvers. After winning the Novice Best of Show in that ODCCA contest you must move up to at least the Intermediate. Amateur: Nonprofessional carvers. After winning the Amateur Best of Show in that ODCCA contest you must enter the Open. 6. If any entry deteriorates or fails before the end of the contest, it will be disqualified. 7. All visible marks that would identify the carver must be covered. Fish Decoy Contest, Not an IWCA Contest Fish decoys are fishing lures, usually without hooks, that are designed to be jigged through a hole in the ice to lure fish within range of a spear. Levels of Competition: Open and Youth. 1. All fish decoys must be made of wood. No castings, kits, or machine duplicated carvings in whole or part will be allowed. Fins and barbels must be made of wood, metal or leather. Line-ties and eyes are the only pre-formed items that may be used. The ballast or weight may be made of any material. 2. All fish decoys must have been made after the last ODCCA Show. 3. Fish decoys will be judged in the water and must respond favorable to the jig stick. This generally means the decoy, when placed in the water and jigged, will sink and move forward in a circular pattern. 4. Fish decoys must be of sturdy construction and have durable paint or finish. Those that split, check, lose paint or show other faults in construction during or after judging will be disqualified. 5. Maximum size for all fish decoys is 24-inches. Line-ties are required. If multiple line ties are used, carver must mark the one the judge(s) should utilize. 6. There will be no penalty for the misplacement of pectoral or pelvic fins. 7. All visible marks that would identify the carver must be covered with masking tape. For record keeping purposes, masking tape will be placed on all decoys. 8. There will be three fish decoy categories, each with three classes as follows: Category A - Working Fish Decoys: Only the basic mouth shape, single gill coverings, and delineations for the beginning of the tail fin may be carved or burned into the decoy. No texturing allowed, and no painted scales. Judging criteria: swimming ability - 60%; likeness to species - 30%; craftsmanship – 10%. Category B - Decorative Fish Decoys: Maximum details allowed. Judging criteria: swimming ability - 40%; likeness to species - 50%; craftsmanship – 10%. Categories A and B will have the following classes: 1. Warm-water Game Fish: All Bass, Pike, Musky, Walleye, Sunfish (bluegill, crappie etc.) and Yellow Perch. 2. Cold-water Game Fish: Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat, Golden, Lake and Brook Trout, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden, Salmon and Grayling. 3. Additional Fish: All Catfish, Sturgeon, Suckers, Minnows, Gar, Shad, Cisco, and Whitefish. Category C - Folk-Art Fish Decoys: Judging criteria: swimming ability - 60%; design - 30%; craftsmanship – 10%. Category C will have the following classes: 1. Fish - Must be generic (not like any real fish) in both form and paint. 2. Two Color Fish & Critters. (Eye colors do not count). 3. Critters - May be generic or life-like in form and/or paint. 9. Only one decoy per participant may be entered per class. 10. The Show Chairman will reclassify any entry that is considered to be entered in the wrong category or class. 11. Participants agree to be bound and abide by these official rules and by the decisions of the ODCCA whose decision shall be final in all matters relating to the contest. Decision of the contest chairmen and judge(s) as to all contest matters are final and non-appealable. Entry fee refunds will not be given to any disqualified decoys. |
Decorative Fish Carving Rules
Click here for Decorative Fish Entry form - walk-ins only. 1. Competition open to all carvers. Visible marks identifying the carver must be covered. 2. Only natural wood may be used as a carving material. Wood composites, resins, or other plastics are not permitted. All fins or barbells are to be made from wood or metal. Epoxy or urethane may be used to attach fins or eyes but not molded as a part of the fish. Eyes, screws, display plaques, support structures, and substrate (all pieces of non-created bottom material must be less than 3/8 inch in size) are the only pre-formed material that may be used. 3. There will be three classes as follows: A. Cold-water fish, with or without environment. B. Warm-water fish, with or without environment. C. Wall Plaques, without environment. 4. Species allowed are limited to native freshwater fish found in the United States and Canada with the addition of brown trout and common carp. Salmon will be considered freshwater fish. Coldwater fish are all fish with an adipose fin, except catfish, bullheads, and matoms. 5. The show chairman and/or judges will reclassify any entry that is considered to be entered in the wrong class. 6. Participants agree to be bound and abide by these official rules and by the decisions of the ODCCA whose decision shall be final in all matters relating to the contest. Decision of the contest chairmen and judge(s) as to all contest matters are final and non-appealable. 7. All Carvings must remain on display until 3 p.m. on Sunday. 8. Mail-in entries will not be accepted. 9. NEW: Any fish carving may be drilled if suspected of not being wood. Jigging Stick Rules Jigging sticks are used by “darkhouse” anglers to move their fish decoys under the ice to attract fish within range of a spear. 1. Competition is open to all carvers. All visible marks that would identify the maker must be covered. 2 Only natural wood may be used as a carving material. 3. There will be three classes as follows: A. Deluxe - maximum detail allowed. B. Working - no carving, burning or texturing allowed. C. Natural Finish - no paint allowed. 4. The show chairman and/or judges will reclassify any entry that is considered to be entered in the wrong class. 5. Participants agree to be bound and abide by these official rules and by the decisions of the ODCCA whose decision shall be final in all matters relating to the contest. Decision of the contest chairmen and judge(s) as to all contest matters are final and non-appealable. 6. All sticks must remain on display until 3 p.m. on Sunday. 7. Mail-in entries will be accepted. |
