We welcome estates at our auction...
We help manage the transition of vintage decoy collections from estate storage to appreciative collectors. The Ky Kraus Memorial Auction is the largest in-person auction of its kind in the Midwest specializing in waterfowl and related items.
Thank you ODCCA...Liquidation of family Decoy Collection, Paul Herbeck estate In 2025, my stepdad, Paul Herbeck, passed away from complications due to esophageal cancer. Paul was an intricate man, with many collections and hobbies. He enjoyed wood carving and the artistry of decoys. Paul was born and raised in Maryland near Washington D.C. We know that many family members lived around the Chesapeake Bay region and his collection of decoys could have stemmed from exposure in the region. When Paul passed, we knew there was a large collection, but were uncertain of the size. Perhaps it was by chance that the Ohio Decoy Collectors & Carving Association winter newsletter came in the mail when it did. When I reached out to let the membership or the newsletter committee be aware they could stop sending the newsletters to Paul’s address, Vic Sutek responded asking if we were thinking about coming to the 2026 show and attempting to liquidate the collection. As a family, we had thought about reaching out to ask about participation. I was glad that Vic responded so quickly. My siblings and I made the decision to participate and with the assistance of Vic, and due to his outreach and willingness to help, we felt comfortable attending the show. My sister and I inventoried by pictures about 95% of the collection. We had no idea what they were worth or who the artists were. Vic was extremely helpful in determining which pieces were important and how we needed to sell some of these items (by pairs as an example). He was able to assist with coordinating which decoys would be set up in the ODCCA auction (which Emily and I thoroughly enjoyed observing) and then matched us up with Guyette & Deeter auction house to sell some of the more popular and valuable decoys on their online auction. Jon and his son with Guyette & Deeter greatly assisted us with pricing for the show. Ken, Vic, Jon, Emily and I cannot thank you enough for your assistance with the decoy show. In the end, my family knew that we wanted these items to go to people who enjoyed wood carvings and decoys. They needed happy homes to belong to where they would bring joy to their new owners. I am certain given the individuals we met over the weekend, that there are others who will likely find themselves in similar situations, whether downsizing in general or working on an estate. It made perfect sense for us to reach out to the organization that Paul enjoyed spending his time with. We are certain we were able to honor his memory, love of wood carvings and decoys by moving through the steps we did. Emily and I learned a ton from our participation in the weekend’s show. The people were kind and friendly; they offered lots of advice as well. We appreciate all the members who stopped by to chat with us and provide guidance. Thank you! Jennifer Hogan and Emily And new this year were exclusive consignments from some of the most celebrated carvers in the country! Each artist personally autographed their carving to the winning bidder. How ODCCA BeganOn March 15 - 16, 2025, the ODCCA is holding its 46th Annual Vintage Decoys & Wildlife SHOW and SALE.
In 1963, a group of decoy collectors met in the Cleveland area to share their interest and knowledge about this artform first created by indigenous people. In 1976, the ODCCA was organized with the goal of holding an annual show and sale. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers who have kept this show going for 45 years! |
